Aluthgamage’s legal team submitted the appeal today, contesting his conviction in connection with a Rs. 53 million loss to the state over the importation of carrom boards in 2014. The case is tied to alleged misuse of public funds to distribute sports equipment during the run-up to the 2015 Presidential Election.
On May 29, the High Court sentenced Aluthgamage to 20 years and former Lanka Sathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for their roles in the corruption case.
