A national program was held at the Colombo Port City beach premises to mark World Oceans Day.

The event was held under the patronage of the Minister of Environment, Dr. Dammika Patabandige, and Deputy Minister Anton Jayakody.

World Oceans Day is commemorated annually to raise awareness about the value of the ocean and the need to protect it. This year's theme was "Protect the Magnificent Ocean That Protects Us."

Coinciding with the celebration at Colombo Port City, a range of activities was organized to direct the attention of schoolchildren and the general public toward the marine ecosystem.

An exhibition related to the marine ecosystem was held, featuring around 35 display stalls. The event was organized mainly by the Marine Environment Protection Authority, in collaboration with the Clean Sri Lanka National Program, the Ministry of Environment, and affiliated institutions.

Several engaging activities were organized for the day, including a marine life exhibition, a drawing competition for schoolchildren and younger kids, a creative contest using marine waste, and a design competition using beach sand.

In addition, activities such as beach cleanups, an expert panel discussion on marine pollution, a demonstrative volleyball match, and street dramas were also held in conjunction with World Oceans Day.

Focus was placed on reducing the everyday impact on the marine environment, preventing marine pollution, and encouraging public participation to ensure the sustainability of the marine ecosystem, as well as related industries such as fisheries and tourism.
