The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) is expected to release its official recommendation next week regarding the Ceylon Electricity Board’s (CEB) proposal to increase electricity tariffs by 18.3%.

The recommendation follows the conclusion of the public comment period last Thursday, during which feedback was received from all nine provinces. This public consultation process was aimed at ensuring transparency and incorporating citizen input into the decision-making process.

The PUCSL stated that it is currently in the final stages of evaluating submissions, which include the CEB’s proposal, public responses, and detailed reports on electricity generation costs.

“The study is now nearing completion,” a PUCSL spokesperson said. “Our final recommendation will reflect a balanced assessment of the technical, economic, and public interest considerations.”

The proposed tariff revision comes as the CEB cites rising costs of electricity generation and infrastructure maintenance. However, the proposal has drawn mixed reactions from the public and industry stakeholders, with many expressing concern over the potential impact on household expenses and business operations.

The final decision by the PUCSL is anticipated to significantly influence the country’s energy pricing structure for the coming months.
