Former Minister of Labour and Public Relations, Mervyn Silva, who was arrested in early March over allegations of embezzlement and forgery, has been released on bail.

Silva was taken into custody by officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) after he was accused of preparing forged documents related to a land plot in Kelaniya, with the intention of misappropriating public funds.

The alleged fraud reportedly involves significant financial irregularities, raising serious concerns over misuse of state resources.

The CID launched an investigation into the case following complaints regarding suspicious documentation and irregular land dealings. After weeks of detention and preliminary inquiry, Silva was produced before the court, where his legal counsel denied all charges and maintained that the former minister had no involvement in the alleged crimes.

The court granted Silva bail under strict conditions, including a travel ban and a requirement to report regularly to the CID. The case remains under active investigation, and further legal proceedings are expected in the coming weeks.

Silva, a controversial figure in Sri Lankan politics, has faced multiple allegations throughout his career, though few have led to convictions. His release has sparked debate among political observers and the public, with calls for transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigation.
