The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has decided to finalize a long-awaited Bill to officially recognize sign language as a means of communication. This move is set to empower the hearing-impaired community by enhancing access to information and ensuring equal participation in all aspects of society.

The Government stated that the recognition of sign language will promote inclusivity and provide the hearing-impaired with equal opportunities.

The initiative dates back to 2010 when the Cabinet first approved the proposal, followed by a 2021 directive under then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to draft the necessary legislation. The latest decision marks a significant step toward enacting the law.
