A high-level special discussion aimed at resolving issues related to the pensions of retired war veterans and the Widows and Orphans Pension (W&OP) payments to the families of fallen war heroes was held at the Ministry of Defence.

The meeting was convened under the patronage of Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), reflecting the Ministry’s continued commitment to addressing the welfare concerns of those who have served the nation and their families.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, representatives from the Department of Pensions, the Tri-Forces, and relevant stakeholders participated in the discussion. Key issues raised included delays in pension disbursements, gaps in administrative procedures, and the need for better communication between departments involved in processing W&OP benefits.

Air Vice Marshal Thuyacontha (Retd) emphasized the importance of ensuring timely and fair compensation for war veterans and the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. “We owe it to our heroes and their families to ensure they are treated with dignity and receive what is rightfully theirs without delay,” he stated.

The Defence Secretary instructed officials to take immediate steps to streamline the existing procedures and ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive their due payments without bureaucratic hindrance.

The Ministry is expected to announce a follow-up action plan based on the outcomes of today’s discussion in the coming weeks.
