The Sri Lankan government has officially announced that the 2025 Poson Festival in Mihintale will receive full state sponsorship. This marks a significant move to support one of the country’s most revered religious events, commemorating the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka.

The announcement was made following a special meeting at the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs. Venerable Walawahangunawewe Dhammarathana Thero, Chief Incumbent of the Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya, expressed his deep appreciation for the government’s support. He emphasized the importance of this state-backed effort in preserving the cultural and spiritual significance of the festival.

This year’s National Poson Festival will be celebrated under the theme: “May the world be enlightened by the teachings of the Buddha.”

Mihintale, a sacred site believed to be where Arahant Mahinda first preached Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa, draws thousands of devotees each year during Poson Poya. With full state backing, the 2025 celebration is expected to feature large-scale religious observances, alms-giving, and cultural events aimed at promoting spiritual reflection and national unity.
