Councils to Commence Operations in 161 Local Authorities from Tomorrow

These councils correspond to local bodies where a single political party or independent group has secured a clear majority. Their formation will proceed without delay under the new directive.
For the remaining 178 local authorities, where no party has gained a decisive majority, the respective provincial commissioners have been tasked with overseeing the formation process. They will convene meetings with elected representatives and relevant stakeholders to determine the structure and leadership of each council.
The Election Commission officially published the names of all elected and appointed members across the country’s 339 local authorities in a gazette released on May 31. This formal announcement clears the way for newly elected representatives to assume office and begin administrative duties.
Observers say the next few weeks will be crucial for setting the tone of local governance, especially in areas where coalition-building will be necessary. The establishment of functional councils is expected to accelerate decision-making and the rollout of public services at the local level.
