Ranjan Jayalal appointed Mayor of Kaduwela Municipal Council

Jayalal, a well-known leader in the Ceylon Electricity Board Employees’ Union (CEBEU), has long been recognized for his unwavering advocacy for labor rights and working-class empowerment. His appointment marks a significant moment for the NPP, reflecting the party’s commitment to bringing grassroots leadership into key governance roles.
Speaking after his appointment, Jayalal stated, "This is not just a personal achievement, but a victory for every working-class citizen who has long been denied a voice in local administration. I am committed to transparent, people-centered governance that prioritizes social justice and inclusive development."
Jayalal has played a pivotal role in organizing labor movements and pushing for equitable labor policies over the past two decades. His transition from union activism to municipal leadership is seen as a strategic move by the NPP to bridge the gap between grassroots activism and institutional politics.
The Kaduwela Municipal Council, one of the largest in the Western Province, is expected to see a shift in policy direction under Jayalal’s leadership, with early indicators pointing to an increased focus on public services, urban development, and labor-friendly initiatives.
