Gradual reduction in showery conditions in Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology reports that the prevailing showery conditions affecting the southwestern part of Sri Lanka are expected to gradually ease from today, June 1st.

However, showers or thundershowers are still expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North-western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Isolated showers or thundershowers may also occur during the afternoon or night in parts of the Uva province, and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Residents are urged to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning, especially during thundershowers.

Fairly strong winds, ranging between 30–40 kmph, are expected at times over:

The Western slopes of the central hills

Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces

Hambantota and Trincomalee districts

The high wave and strong wind conditions currently affecting sea areas around the island are expected to ease by this evening.

Rainfall:

Showers or thundershowers are likely in sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. A few showers may also occur in other sea areas.

Wind:

Winds will be south-westerly, at speeds of 30–40 kmph.

Gusts may increase to 50 kmph, particularly in sea areas from:

Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar

Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota

Sea Conditions:

These regions may experience rough seas at times.

Wave heights could reach 2.0–2.5 meters in the sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota (not applicable to land areas).

Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to remain cautious, especially during thunderstorms where sudden strong gusts and very rough seas can occur.
