Sri Lanka confirms presence of two new Covid 19 Subvariants: LF.7 and XFG

The Medical Research Institute (MRI) of Sri Lanka has confirmed the detection of two new Omicron subvariants—LF.7 and XFG—currently spreading across parts of Asia, within the country.
Dr. Jude Jayamaha, a specialist in medical virology attached to the Ministry of Health’s Department of Virology and the MRI, stated that the new subvariants were identified through detailed genetic sequencing of biological samples collected from several hospitals across the island.
“These subvariants, LF.7 and XFG, were identified as part of our routine genomic surveillance efforts. We are closely monitoring their spread and characteristics,” Dr. Jayamaha said.
While acknowledging the emergence of these variants, Dr. Jayamaha reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for alarm. “Current data does not suggest that LF.7 or XFG are more severe than previously known Omicron strains. However, we urge the public to continue following recommended health guidelines, especially in high-risk settings.”
The Ministry of Health is continuing to work with international health agencies and local hospitals to track the evolution of the virus and ensure preparedness. Authorities are also encouraging eligible individuals to stay up-to-date with their COVID-19 vaccinations, particularly booster doses.
Health officials have reiterated the importance of preventive measures such as wearing masks in crowded places, frequent handwashing, and seeking medical attention if symptoms of respiratory illness appear.
