A spill gates of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir was opened this afternoon following a significant rise in water levels, the Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Unit confirmed today.
According to a spokesperson from the unit, the decision was taken as a precautionary measure in response to persistent heavy rainfall in the catchment areas. The official further warned that if the current weather conditions persist, the remaining spill gates may also open automatically to ensure safe water flow and prevent potential overflow.
Residents living downstream have been advised to stay alert and follow updates from local authorities, as further releases may increase water levels in surrounding rivers and streams.
The Disaster Management Unit is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with other agencies to ensure public safety.
