Department of Meteorology has issued an urgent advisory to naval and fishing communities, cautioning them against venturing into several key sea areas around Sri Lanka due to active southwest monsoon conditions.

According to the advisory, sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be very rough at times, with wind gusts reaching up to 60-70 kmph. As a result, these areas are considered highly unsafe for fishing and other maritime activities until further notice.

In addition, wind speeds may reach 50-60 kmph intermittently in sea zones stretching from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo, and from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee via Mullaittivu, the department added.

The Meteorology Department further warned of wave heights rising between 2.5 to 3.0 meters, particularly in the sea areas from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. Coastal regions in these zones may also experience shoreline surges due to swell waves, raising the risk of localized flooding and damage.

The department strongly urges all naval and fishing communities operating in the affected areas to remain vigilant and suspend all marine activities until conditions improve. Mariners are advised to follow updates and warnings closely to ensure safety.
