New Zealand deputy Prime Minister meets opposition leader

New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Peters, met with Sri Lankan Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo, in a significant diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening ties between the two island nations.
Peters, who is on an official visit to Sri Lanka, was accompanied by a senior delegation of New Zealand officials. The meeting brought together key members of Sri Lanka’s opposition for a broad-ranging discussion on bilateral cooperation, regional security, and economic resilience in the Indo-Pacific.
Talks highlighted the unique challenges both countries face as trade-dependent island nations navigating an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. Emphasis was placed on enhancing economic collaboration, maritime security, and mutual support in international forums.
“We greatly value our longstanding relationship with Sri Lanka and are committed to deepening our cooperation on regional and global issues,” Peters said following the meeting.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa welcomed the engagement, calling it a “positive and productive dialogue” that reflects a shared vision for stability, sustainability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region.
