Several areas in and around Colombo were severely affected last night as strong winds and heavy rainfall led to widespread disruption, including fallen trees, damaged property, and injuries.
According to police reports, incidents of tree falls were recorded in multiple neighborhoods such as Leslie Ranagala Mawatha in Borella, Grandpass, Bambalapitiya, Dematagoda, Maradana, Jawatta, and Wellawatte.
Emergency teams from the Colombo Municipal Council’s Fire Services Department, working in coordination with the police, were deployed across the city and worked overnight to clear debris and restore access to key roads.
In Grandpass, one of the worst-hit areas, a large tree fell on residential structures, damaging five houses. Meanwhile, in Dematagoda, a wall collapse at a garment factory caused injuries to three individuals, including two women. All injured persons were rushed to the National Hospital for treatment.
The police further confirmed that the roof of the Bambalapitiya Police Barracks sustained significant damage due to the gusty winds.
Railway services were also disrupted as fallen trees blocked multiple railway lines. The Railway Control Room reported obstructions on the coastal line, the main line, the Kelani Valley line, and the Puttalam line. Authorities are working to remove the debris and restore train services as soon as possible.
The Meteorology Department has advised the public to remain cautious, as more adverse weather is expected over the coming days.
