Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who also holds the portfolio of Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training, has voiced strong concern over the alarming rise in reported cases of child abuse within schools across the country.

Addressing a special awareness program organized at the Ministry of Education for school principals in the Colombo District, Dr. Amarasuriya emphasized that any form of violence against school children must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“This is a matter of utmost national importance. The safety and dignity of our children must be safeguarded at all costs,” she stated, urging school leaders to take immediate and decisive action whenever such incidents come to light.

Dr. Amarasuriya underscored the vital responsibility of school principals in creating a secure and nurturing environment for students. “Your leadership plays a critical role in shaping a culture of protection and care within our education system,” she told attendees.

The Prime Minister also announced plans to strengthen policies and introduce new guidelines aimed at preventing abuse and improving response mechanisms within schools.

The program is part of a broader initiative led by the Ministry to raise awareness and build the capacity of school administrators to effectively address issues related to child safety and welfare.
