The Ministry of Environment has officially announced the observance of Environment Week from May 30 to June 5, 2025, which will coincide with World Environment Day on June 5. This week-long initiative aims to raise awareness about environmental protection and promote sustainable practices across the nation.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is "Beat Plastic Pollution," a global call to action aimed at reducing plastic waste, which remains one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time. Plastic waste continues to contribute significantly to environmental degradation, particularly in marine ecosystems, and the Ministry's initiative aligns with efforts to mitigate this threat.

In a statement issued today, Minister Dr. Dhammika Pati Bandhi emphasized the importance of responsible plastic waste management and announced that May 30 will be observed as Plastic Waste Management Day. On this day, the Ministry will highlight practical solutions for tackling plastic waste and will encourage citizens to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.

Minister Bandhi stated, "Plastic pollution is an issue that requires immediate attention. This year, as we mark World Environment Day, let us reflect on our role in safeguarding our environment for future generations. Our government is committed to implementing policies that encourage waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable consumption."

Throughout Environment Week, the Ministry will organize a series of events, workshops, and awareness campaigns, including community clean-up programs, educational outreach in schools, and collaborations with environmental NGOs. These activities will focus on the urgent need for plastic waste reduction, recycling initiatives, and creating awareness about the harmful impacts of single-use plastics.

As part of the observance, the public is encouraged to participate in various activities designed to promote sustainable living. Individuals and organizations can take the pledge to reduce plastic usage, support alternatives to plastic packaging, and engage in local clean-up efforts.

The Ministry also urges businesses to adopt more sustainable practices and reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. "In order to make real progress, we must work together government, industry, and citizens aliketo tackle this growing problem and protect our environment," added Minister Bandhi.

The observance of Environment Week and World Environment Day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to care for the planet. By focusing on "Beating Plastic Pollution," Sri Lanka aims to contribute to the global effort to reduce plastic waste and promote a cleaner, healthier world for all.
