The Colombo Grand Mosque has officially announced that Muslims in Sri Lanka will celebrate Eid al-Adha, also known as the Hajj festival, on Saturday, June 7.

The decision follows the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

According to the Moon Sighting Committee, the crescent moon was sighted in Sri Lanka today, making Thursday, May 29 the first day of Dhul Hijjah. Consequently, Arafat Day — the most important day of the Hajj pilgrimage — will be observed on Friday, June 6, followed by Eid al-Adha the next day.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the unwavering faith and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. The festival is marked by special prayers, acts of charity, and the ritual sacrifice of animals, the meat of which is shared among family, friends, and those in need.

The festival coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia. Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is a religious obligation for all Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey at least once in their lifetime.

As preparations begin across the country, the Muslim community in Sri Lanka is expected to mark the occasion with devotion, reflection, and community spirit.
