The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued early landslide warnings for several areas in four districts as heavy rainfall continues across parts of the island.
The Level 1 (Yellow) warnings came into effect at 10:00 a.m. today (28) and will remain in place until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (29), the NBRO announced. The warnings are issued as a precaution due to persistent rain and the potential for slope failures in vulnerable areas.
The districts and respective Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) under the warning are as follows:
- Galle District: Elpitiya DSD and surrounding areas
- Kalutara District: Palindanuwara DSD and surrounding areas
- Kandy District: Ganga Ihala Korale and Pasbage Korale DSDs and surrounding areas
- Kegalle District: Bulathkohupitiya, Ruwanwella, Aranayake, and Yatiyanthota DSDs and surrounding areas
Residents living in these areas are urged to remain vigilant and to take necessary precautions, especially those living near slopes, cuttings, and mountainous terrain.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology reports that the active southwest monsoon conditions are expected to bring enhanced showers over the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, and Kandy districts in the coming days.
Authorities advise the public to closely follow official updates and weather advisories, and to be prepared for possible emergency measures if conditions worsen.
