SL Navy seizes over 600kg of narcotics in Major Drug Bust

The successful operation, carried out yesterday in Sri Lanka’s southern territorial waters, resulted in the apprehension of 11 suspects and the confiscation of the vessels believed to have been used for drug trafficking.
According to a statement issued by the Navy, the two boats were escorted to the Dikowita Fisheries Harbour early this morning. Navy officials, alongside law enforcement agencies, began preliminary investigations and narcotics verification procedures shortly after docking.
“While the exact quantity is still being verified, initial assessments confirm that the combined haul exceeds 600 kilograms,” the Navy’s spokesperson stated. “This is a significant blow to transnational drug trafficking networks operating in the region.”
Authorities suspect the drugs were being smuggled into Sri Lanka from international waters, using local fishing vessels as cover. The suspects, all believed to be Sri Lankan nationals, are currently being interrogated by the Police Narcotics Bureau.
The seizure comes amid intensified maritime patrols and intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing the growing threat of drug trafficking through Sri Lankan waters.
Further investigations are underway, and officials have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests as the operation expands.
