A pioneering figure in Sri Lanka’s sporting and cultural history, Gwen Herath (née Ayesha Weerakoon), passed away, leaving behind an enduring legacy in women’s cricket, provincial politics, and Sinhala cinema.

Mrs. Herath, who founded the Women’s Cricket Association of Sri Lanka (WCASL), played a pivotal role in shaping the future of women’s cricket in the country. Her leadership and dedication led to the eventual integration of the WCASL with Sri Lanka Cricket in 2006, a landmark moment that solidified the sport’s position nationally.

In addition to her sports leadership, Gwen Herath served as a Provincial Councillor in the North Western Province, continuing her commitment to public service. She was also known as the devoted spouse of the late Harold Herath, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Before embarking on her journey in public service and sports administration, Gwen Herath was celebrated for her talents in cinema. Under her maiden name, Ayesha Weerakoon, she starred in the iconic 1953 Sinhala film Prema Tharangaya, playing the lead opposite famed actor Aruna Shanthi. Her performance remains etched in the annals of Sri Lankan film history.

Her remains are currently lying at A.F. Raymond’s Funeral Parlour in Borella, where friends, family, and admirers are paying their respects. The funeral service is scheduled for today, May 28, at 2:30 p.m., followed by burial at the Borella Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.

Gwen Herath’s multifaceted legacy as a sports pioneer, public servant, and actress—will be remembered and celebrated by the nation she served so passionately.
