Sri Lanka's latest local government elections have seen a wave of victories for the National People's Power (NPP), securing clear majorities in numerous municipal councils and pradeshiya sabhas across the country. The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) also recorded strong showings in key areas.

In what political analysts are calling a significant shift in grassroots support, the NPP won clear majorities in 19 local government bodies, including major urban centers and strategic suburban regions. These include:

Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council (12 out of 25 seats)

Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia MC (29 out of 54 seats)

Kaduwela MC (26 out of 47 seats)

Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte MC (21 out of 39 seats)

Kesbewa UC (20 out of 24 seats)

Other notable wins for the NPP include victories in Ampara UC, Hambantota PS, Maharagama UC, and Homagama PS, where the party captured significant ground in electorates traditionally dominated by established parties.

Meanwhile, ITAK secured majorities in Karachchi PS (20 out of 27 seats) and Manmunai West PS (10 out of 19 seats), reaffirming its influence in Tamil-majority regions.

The National Congress also registered a clear win in Akkaraipattu PS, securing 5 out of 9 seats.
