The People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has raised concerns about the growing number of election law violations in the lead-up to the 2025 Local Government (LG) Elections, revealing that over 300 incidents have been reported so far.

According to PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi, a total of 322 violations have been brought to the organisation’s attention. Among these are 30 incidents related to the misuse of state power and resources, of which 14 have been confirmed.

Additionally, Hettiarachchi said that 18 incidents of election-related violence have been reported, with 17 confirmed. Notably, 38 cases involving the offering of donations or bribes to voters have also surfaced. However, he noted that such incidents are not seen as a significant concern in an election involving around 70,000 candidates.

He further revealed that several candidates have been arrested in connection with various violations, and one candidate has been murdered, though authorities have yet to determine whether the murder is directly linked to the election.

PAFFREL continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged both the authorities and the public to uphold the integrity of the democratic process as campaigning intensifies.
