In a significant step in Sri Lanka's ongoing battle against narcotics, nearly 500 kilograms of heroin were destroyed today under the supervision of law enforcement and judicial authorities.

A total of 494 kilograms and 48 grams of heroin, for which legal proceedings had been completed, were incinerated at a high-temperature furnace owned by Insi Cement Company, located in the Palaviya area of Puttalam.

The heroin consignment was transported under tight security from the Colombo High Court earlier this morning following a court order mandating its destruction. The operation was carried out with the participation of multiple government agencies, led by the Sri Lanka Police as part of its nationwide drug prevention campaign.

Acting Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasuriya, was present during the incineration process, underscoring the government’s commitment to building a safer, drug-free nation.

Authorities confirmed that the destruction was executed in compliance with environmental and legal standards.

This event marks one of the largest single consignments of heroin to be destroyed in the country, sending a strong message about Sri Lanka’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking.
