Five individuals were hospitalized today following a lightning strike at Basawakkulam Lake in Anuradhapura, police said. The victims, who were on a pilgrimage, were bathing in the lake when the incident occurred this afternoon.
According to the Anuradhapura Headquarters Police, the injured include men aged 24, 30, 38, and 48, from Payagala, Walpola, and Ratnapura. Two of them, a father and son aged 48 and 24 respectively, are currently in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.
Police said the lightning struck while one of the individuals was on a phone call on the deck near the bathing area. The force of the strike also damaged a large tree, splitting a branch and causing visible damage down to the roots.
Authorities urge the public to avoid open areas and water bodies during lightning-prone weather conditions and to refrain from using mobile phones outdoors during storms.
