The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres converge, is currently influencing the island's weather, bringing widespread rainfall and potential thunderstorms.

Showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the island during the afternoon or night. Meanwhile, several spells of morning showers are likely in the Western Province and in Puttalam, Mannar, Jaffna, Galle, and Matara districts.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in parts of Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Eastern, and North-central provinces, as well as in Vavuniya, Mullaittivu, and Kurunegala districts.

Authorities urge the public to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning, which may occur during thundershowers.

Misty conditions are also forecast in some areas of the Central and Uva provinces during the morning hours.

Showers and Strong Winds Expected Around Coastal Areas – Mariners Advised to Exercise Caution

The Department of Meteorology has issued a marine weather forecast warning of showers or thundershowers across several sea areas surrounding the island within the next 24 hours.

Winds are expected to blow from the south-west to south at speeds ranging between 20–30 kmph. However, gusts could intensify up to 40 kmph, particularly in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Sea conditions in these regions may become moderate at times, with the potential for temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.

Fishermen and naval personnel are strongly advised to remain alert and avoid risky ventures during inclement weather.
