Heavy showers expected across the island

The Department of Meteorology warns that the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet, is currently influencing the island’s weather, resulting in widespread showers and thunderstorms.
Showers or thundershowers are expected across most parts of the island during the afternoon or night. Coastal areas in the Western Province, along with Puttalam, Mannar, Galle, and Matara districts, may experience several spells of showers during the morning hours.
Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75mm is likely in parts of the Central, Uva, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Vavuniya and Polonnaruwa districts. Misty conditions are also expected during the morning in Central and Uva provinces and in the Ampara district.
The public is advised to take adequate precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers to avoid possible damage and safety risks.
Weather Conditions at Sea
Marine forecasts indicate that showers or thundershowers are likely in the sea areas extending from Mannar to Matara via Puttalam, Colombo, and Galle. Other sea areas around the island may also experience showers in the evening or night.
Winds will be south-westerly, with speeds ranging from 25-35 kmph, occasionally increasing up to 45 kmph in sea areas from Chilaw to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
These sea areas may become fairly rough at times, while other sea regions around the island will be slight to moderate. Mariners are cautioned of temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.
