The Chairman of the Election Commission, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, has announced that strict action will be taken against anyone engaging in election-related activities that interfere with the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) examinations this year. This stern warning comes as the country prepares for the upcoming local government elections.
According to Mr. Ratnayake, the acceptance of nominations for the elections will commence at 8:30 a.m. the day after tomorrow. Nominations will be accepted until 12 noon on March 20th.
He further urged political parties and independent groups intending to submit nominations to ensure that their nomination papers are correctly marked, in accordance with the regulations.
Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake also issued a statement emphasizing the importance of following proper procedures when submitting nominations. In the meantime, several political parties and independent groups have already deposited the required bail money for the elections.
Notably, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has deposited security money for all local government institutions in the Kegalle district, marking a significant step in the nomination process for these institutions.
The Election Commission continues to stress the importance of a smooth election process while ensuring that the education of students is not disrupted during this critical period.
