Deputy Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, emphasized the government's commitment to improving public health by targeting citizens over the age of 40 for comprehensive medical examinations over the next five years.
As part of this populist initiative, the Ministry of Health aims to ensure that every citizen in this age group undergoes thorough health checks within a specific time frame, with the goal of identifying and treating potential health issues early.
Dr. Wijemuni, speaking at the inauguration of the 5th "Suwa Udana" mobile health clinic program at the Ranawana Purana Viharaya in Pilimathalawa, Kandy District, explained that this initiative is embedded in the government's national health policy. The plan includes not only medical screenings but also the provision of necessary treatment services for diseases discovered during these examinations, alongside a long-term health program to support citizens.
"One of our key objectives is to ensure the health of every individual over 40 through medical examinations, which will help in identifying diseases early. This program is integral to the national policy on public health, and the Ministry of Health has already taken the necessary steps to implement it," Dr. Wijemuni stated.
In addition to this long-term initiative, the Deputy Minister highlighted the role of the "Suwa Udana" mobile health clinic program as a crucial short-term step in reaching rural populations. This mobile clinic program, which provides essential healthcare services to underserved areas, continues to expand its reach. The 5th edition of the program this year was held throughout the day at the Ranawana Purana Viharaya in the Yatinuwara Divisional Secretariat Division.
The "Suwa Udana" program aims to bring healthcare directly to rural communities, providing vital services to those who may have limited access to medical facilities. This initiative is an important part of the government's efforts to improve healthcare accessibility and address health disparities across the country.
Dr. Wijemuni’s remarks were made as the government pushes forward with its long-term strategy to enhance public health, especially for older citizens, and ensure that all Sri Lankans have access to the medical care they need.
