President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, also the Minister of Finance, is set to present the 2025 national budget to Parliament today (17th February) at 10:30 AM. This year's budget holds special significance as it follows the absence of a budget document in 2024, with government funds being allocated through supplementary estimates due to the country's ongoing economic crisis. Meanwhile Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the Budget 2025 to be presented to the Parliament, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

The government is working under the constraints of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) agreement, which requires Sri Lanka to increase state revenue to 15.1% of its GDP in 2025. Despite these pressures, political reports suggest that the budget will offer maximum relief to the population, including public servants, without violating IMF stipulations.

The budget aims to address the urgent financial needs of the people while supporting national development, following Sri Lanka's recent bankruptcy and subsequent recovery efforts with IMF assistance. While meeting IMF conditions, the proposals will involve all segments of the population in the country’s economic recovery.

The Appropriation Bill debate is scheduled to begin tomorrow (18th February) and will continue through the 21st, with the second reading of the budget set for February 25th. The Committee Stage debate will follow, lasting from February 27th to March 21st. The final third reading vote on the Appropriation Bill will take place on March 21st.

During the budget debate period, daily parliamentary sessions will be allocated for question time, with discussions running from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Special motions will be debated from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM, except on February 25th and March 21st.

The government's 2025 budget marks a critical step toward balancing public relief with fiscal responsibility, setting the stage for the country’s gradual economic recovery.
