In a significant move towards national unity, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced the establishment of a special day in October to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and values of all ethnic communities in Sri Lanka.
Speaking at a gathering in Valvettithurai, Jaffna, President Dissanayake emphasized the importance of uniting the diverse peoples of the island. “Tamils, Sinhalese, Buddhists, Catholics, and Muslims. Don’t we all want a day to celebrate together?” he said, highlighting the necessity of recognizing the contributions of all groups to the nation's heritage.
The event, scheduled for October, will be a grand national festival featuring the cultures, foods, clothing, and lifestyles of Sri Lanka’s various communities. The initiative aims to foster understanding and harmony among the country's people by celebrating their shared history and rich diversity.
"We will make this state a state where all the children of the North, South, and East will unite," President Dissanayake declared, stressing the importance of unity for future generations. Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s past, he acknowledged the wounds of the civil war but vowed that the current generation would work to ensure a peaceful future. “Even if our generation waged war, we will not allow our children’s generation to wage war,” he added.
The announcement has been met with widespread support, with many hailing it as a step towards reconciliation and lasting peace. The festival is expected to be a landmark event, symbolizing Sri Lanka’s commitment to unity in diversity.
