In a significant development, several military, police, and civil defence personnel have been arrested in connection with a series of recent crimes and shootings, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala revealed in Parliament today.
Among those apprehended are an Army Major, six military officers, a police officer, and a civil defence officer, according to the Minister. Additionally, 15 organized criminals and 15 individuals suspected of aiding these illicit activities have also been arrested.
Minister Wijepala shared that, upon reviewing crimes committed since September 23, authorities discovered that certain military personnel were involved in these criminal operations while still in active service.
The Minister also outlined the impressive haul of weapons seized since the current government took office. The recovery includes 7 T56 rifles, 10 pistols, 14 revolvers, 461 shotguns, 58 Bore 12 rifles, and 13 Gal Katas rifles, further highlighting the severity of the situation.
The arrests and ongoing investigations signal the government's commitment to curbing corruption and criminal activities within the country's security forces. Further details on the case are expected to be released in the coming days.
