The Irrigation Department has reported that 34 out of 73 major reservoirs and 18 out of medium-sized reservoirs have reached their maximum levels. As a result, spill gates have been opened at several reservoirs, with 89% of the total reservoir capacity currently filled.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued showers in many areas today, January 13. Showers or thundershowers are expected in the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Hambantota districts. Moderate to heavy rains, exceeding 50 mm, are possible in the Uva Province and the districts of Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Ampara, and Hambantota.

 The weather department has also warned of rough sea conditions along the coast from Colombo via Puttalam to Mannar and from Galle via Hambantota to Pottuvil.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued a Level 1 landslide warning for several areas due to the ongoing torrential rains. 

The warning affects the Welimada, Passara, Hali Ela, and Badulla Provincial Secretariat divisions in the Badulla District, as well as the Ududumbara, Meda Dumbara, and Pathadumbara areas in the Kandy District. 

Additionally, landslide warnings have been issued for the Rideegama Divisional Secretariat Division in the Kurunegala District, the Ratthota and Ukuwela areas in Matale, and the Walapane and Haguranketha areas in Nuwara Eliya.

Residents in these affected areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
