Due to heavy rainfall in the Gal Oya catchment area on the night of January 10, the water level of the Gal Oya increased significantly. As a result, the spill gates of the Gal Oya were opened, releasing water into the Kadudulla Lake.

As the water capacity of Kaudulla Lake approached its spill level, officials took precautionary measures and opened four of the twelve spill gates of the Kaudulla Tank by one foot each this morning (January 11). 

This controlled release is expected to discharge 1,000 cubic feet of water per second into the Kahambiliya Oya light of this Irrigation Department has issued a public advisory, urging residents to exercise caution while using water from the Kahambiliya Oya, as the increased flow may affect local water usage.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and will take further action if necessary to manage water levels and prevent flooding.
