The Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government, Professor Chandana Abeyrathna, revealed that Rs. 30 billion in pension arrears and gratuities remain unpaid, affecting around 600,000 pensioners.
Some of these arrears have been outstanding since 1992, causing significant inconvenience to retirees.
The Minister assured that plans are underway to settle the dues promptly. Discussions with the Ministry of Finance are being arranged to address the issue.
Professor Abeyrathna also criticized previous governments for neglecting pension gratuity payments and instructed officials to expedite the settlement process.
