Due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the Polonnaruwa district, the water levels in the region's main reservoirs have surged. As a result, the Irrigation Department has been forced to open all 12 spill gates of the Kaudulla Reservoir, as water levels have reached the overflow point.
The spillways were opened incrementally, with each gate releasing one foot of water at a time. Currently, a substantial 2990 cubic feet of water per second is being discharged into the Kaudulla Oya.
The department has issued an urgent advisory, urging residents living on both sides of the Kaudulla Oya to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, as the release of water could cause localized flooding. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take further action if necessary to ensure the safety of the public.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather warnings and adhere to any evacuation orders or safety measures issued by local officials.
