Sri Lanka Police arrested 529 drunk drivers in a 24 hour nationwide operation that ended at 6.00 AM today (January 1), as part of efforts to reduce traffic accidents during the festive season.
According to the Police Media Division, a total of 7,264 drivers faced penalties for various traffic violations during this period. The breakdown of offenses includes, 1,057 charged for breaching traffic rules, 614 for license-related violations, 54 for speeding, 57 for reckless driving, 4,953 for other traffic offenses.
This marks the highest number of drunk driving arrests recorded in a single day since the launch of the special traffic operation.
The operation, initiated on December 23 under the directives of the Acting Inspector General of Police, aims to improve road safety across the island during the festive season, a time known for increased traffic incidents.
