Torrential rains in Vavuniya district have led to significant flooding, with approximately 125 tanks overflowing and three tanks breaking. The Irrigation Department has reported that all 600 tanks in the area, including small, medium, and large-sized tanks, have been affected, with draining operations currently underway.

Among the damaged tanks, the Ramayankulam tank, located in the Vavuniya Settikulam Divisional Secretariat, the Nagarayankulam tank in Aravithottam, and the Omantha Madattuvilankulam tank have broken due to the heavy rainfall.

Authorities have mobilized the army and local residents to assist in temporary repairs to prevent further damage and mitigate the risk of flooding.

In addition to the tank overflows, the Vavuniya Disaster Management Officer has issued an alert to residents, urging them to stay vigilant as floodwaters have reached overflow levels. The officer warned that there is a heightened risk of flooding, particularly for people living in low-lying areas.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to manage the crisis.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to take precautionary measures and stay updated on the latest weather and safety alerts.
