The Ministry of Labour has urged all private-sector employers to grant leave to their employees based on the distance to their polling stations for tomorrow's 2024 General Election.

Secretary of the Ministry, S. Aloka Bandara, confirmed that both the Ministry and the National Election Commission have made this request.

Employees whose polling station is within 40 kilometers of their workplace should receive half a day's leave. If the distance is between 40 and 100 kilometers, a full day's leave should be granted. For distances between 100 and 150 kilometers, one and a half days of leave are required. Employees traveling more than 150 kilometers should be granted two days of leave.

Bandara emphasized that these leaves must be granted without affecting the employees' pay or personal leave entitlement.
