The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing of Fundamental Rights petitions challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as Inspector General of Police (IGP) for February 24, 2025.
These petitions, submitted by several parties, including Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, were reviewed today (November 11) by a three-member judge panel headed by Justice Yasantha Kodagoda.
During the session, the court granted the Attorney General additional time to file objections on behalf of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was previously named as a respondent in the case on October 29. The court also approved a request from Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle to present the current President's position on Tennakoon’s appointment.
On 29 November 2023, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed Tennakoon as acting Inspector General of Police. He was appointed as the permanent Inspector General of Police on 26 February 2024 and was suspended on 24 July 2024.
