President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced plans to reduce electricity tariffs by more than 30% within the next one to one-and-a-half years.
Speaking at a public meeting of the National People’s Power (NPP) in Dambulla, Dissanayake assured the public that significant changes would be implemented in the country’s electricity sector in the near future.
“We are committed to creating a massive transformation in the electricity sector,” Dissanayake told the gathering. “In the next 12 to 18 months, we will reduce the electricity bill by more than 30%. All we need is a little time to make these changes, and we will also focus on reducing fuel prices.”
The President's statement comes amid growing concerns over rising electricity and fuel costs, which have heavily impacted the cost of living for many Sri Lankans. Dissanayake emphasized that the NPP government would work towards easing the financial burden on the public through these planned reductions.
“We understand the struggles of the people, and we are committed to bringing relief through these long-term plans,” he added.
The announcement has sparked optimism among residents of Dambulla and beyond, many of whom have expressed frustration with escalating utility bills in recent years.
