The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) reports that over 3,000 driving licenses have been temporarily suspended this year following court orders for various traffic offenses.
The Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasingha, confirmed that since January, 3,249 licenses have been suspended due to traffic violations.
Meanwhile, Professor Mohamed Mahees from the University of Colombo’s Department of Sociology noted that reckless driving and poor vehicle conditions are major causes of frequent road accidents. He emphasized the importance of vehicle checks and also highlighted issues in the road system as factors contributing to the rise in accidents.
