With just five days remaining for election campaigning, the Election Commissioner General, Mr. Saman Sri Ratnayake, has announced that the campaigning for this year's general election will officially end at midnight on Monday,November 11th.
This marks the commencement of the "quiet period," during which all election-related publicity and campaigning must cease.
Mr. Ratnayake emphasized that during this period, no publicity, whether in the form of advertisements, speeches, or other promotional activities, will be allowed.
He also made it clear that candidates' families must refrain from participating in vote solicitation activities. “Candidates’ families are prohibited from engaging in any activities that involve directly or indirectly appealing for votes. Going door-to-door to canvass is strictly illegal,” Mr. Ratnayake said.
The quiet period is enforced to ensure that voters can make their decisions without external influence, allowing for a free and fair election environment. Election authorities have urged candidates and their supporters to adhere strictly to these regulations to avoid legal consequences.
As the election approaches, voters are reminded to ensure they are registered and ready to cast their ballots on election day.
