Doctors at Karapitiya National Hospital called off their indefinite strike today (November 5) after authorities agreed to transfer a specialist from the oncology unit to Maharagama Apeksha Hospital. The strike began at 8 a.m. and was organized by doctors who raised concerns over alleged misconduct by the specialist, which they say affected their work environment.

The doctors initially held a token strike over the same issue, expressing frustration at the lack of action from hospital management. When no resolution was provided, they escalated to an indefinite strike to demand a solution.

Dr. Asanka Konara, Co-Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), explained that the strike was aimed at pressuring authorities to address long-standing issues with the specialist’s behavior. After the transfer decision, the doctors resumed their duties, hopeful this action would bring lasting improvement to their workplace.
