The Ministry of Health has initiated a special measles vaccination program, running from today (4) until November 9, aimed at enhancing immunization coverage in response to recent measles cases reported in some areas. This program will be implemented across 12 selected districts nationwide.

Despite Sri Lanka's successful efforts in eradicating measles, Dr. Hasitha Tissera, a Senior Epidemiologist at the Ministry’s Epidemiology Unit, emphasized the importance of this initiative to protect the younger generation. The program specifically targets individuals who have not received the measles vaccine or those who may have missed a dose.

Dr. Tissera noted the necessity of identifying individuals lacking complete vaccination, particularly those who have received only one dose, to ensure they receive the crucial second dose. “The main goal is to provide measles vaccination. While we have made significant strides in measles control over the past two decades, the risk of outbreaks remains if the virus re-enters our communities,” he stated.

The Ministry encourages parents and guardians to take advantage of this program to safeguard their children against measles, reinforcing the collective effort to maintain public health and prevent the resurgence of the virus.
