Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya reassured the public and foreign nationals that their safety is guaranteed in Sri Lanka. He made these statements during a press conference on October 23 at the Polonnaruwa Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Office. The comments come in light of recent warnings regarding a potential terrorist threat targeting popular tourist areas, particularly in the Arugam Bay region.
Weerasooriya emphasized that intelligence agencies have been actively monitoring the situation since receiving crucial information about possible threats as early as October 7. The surveillance efforts were deemed necessary given suspicions that such threats could extend to foreign nationals visiting Sri Lanka.
He revealed that the Security Council, chaired by the President, discussed the potential for attacks aimed at tourists from specific countries approximately three weeks ago. Following these discussions, law enforcement was instructed to implement enhanced security measures.
To ensure the safety of foreigners, specific locations, and places of worship, security measures have been escalated. This includes the deployment of police forces, Special Task Force (STF) units, and intelligence officers across critical areas.
A specialized security plan was initiated since yesterday (October 22), focusing on key tourist spots and religious sites that may attract foreign visitors. The Acting IGP noted that this initiative is a direct response to confirmed threats and is aimed at bolstering security during this sensitive time.
He stated that embassies have been informed about the current security situation and measures being taken to protect foreign nationals. This proactive approach is part of the government’s effort to reassure foreign visitors and ensure their well-being.
The Security Council convened again on the morning of October 23 to review the evolving security landscape. Security chiefs and commanders from the three armed forces participated in discussions to assess the situation further.
Weerasooriya reported that, based on the latest intelligence, the security of foreigners remains assured, and the police continue to monitor the situation closely.
In addition to addressing concerns for foreign nationals, the Acting IGP confirmed that, at this time, no specific threats targeting local citizens have been identified. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant but assured them that security agencies are actively working to maintain peace and safety in the country.
