The Ministry of Plantations has introduced a mobile coconut sales initiative aimed at offering consumers coconuts at reasonable prices.
According to a ministry announcement, the initial phase of this program began today in various locations across Colombo and its surrounding areas.
Mobile coconut sales vehicles have been deployed at the following sites: Near Welikada Police Station in Colombo, Kirulapone Market, Finance Ministry premises, near the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council area, Ananda Samarakoon Open Theater in Nugegoda, Sethsiripaya premises, covering Kaduwela and Battaramulla and near the Coconut Cultivation Board on Denzil Kobbekaduwa Mawatha as Ministry of Plantations stated.
Initially focused on a few selected key locations, the ministry plans to expand this initiative to additional districts in the near future.
Under this program, the Coconut Cultivation Board will supply about 10,000 coconuts to the market on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On the remaining days of the week, an additional 5,000 coconuts will be made available, totaling 15,000 coconuts to meet local demand.
Additionally, the Kurunegala Plantations Company will supply 1,500 coconuts daily starting October 22, and the Chilaw Plantations Company has also committed to providing 3,000 coconuts daily from today (October 23).
The Ministry of Plantations indicated that the anticipated retail price for each coconut will range from Rs. 100 to Rs. 120.
