The Supreme Court has declined to hear a fundamental rights petition challenging President Ranil Wickramasinghe's eligibility to contest the upcoming presidential election.
The petition was based on allegations that Wickramasinghe had failed to appoint an Acting Inspector General of Police and had not filled vacancies for judges in the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal.
In addition to refusing the petition, the Court ordered the petitioner to pay 50,000 rupees in court fees. Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle, representing the Attorney General, argued that the petitioners had presented false information and that the application violated Article 92 of the Constitution.
