The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has alerted the public about a rise in scams involving individuals posing as tax officials in Colombo, Panadura, Negombo, Wennappuwa, and Minuwangoda.
IRD clarified that genuine tax officers will never collect cash or cheques directly and will only advise payments to be made to designated bank accounts at the Bank of Ceylon (BOC) or People’s Bank.
The public is asked to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station as soon as possible.
