The Online Safety (Amendment) Bill has been published in the government gazette.
The Online Safety Bill has sparked considerable debate, with concerns raised about potential restrictions on freedom of expression and possible constitutional violations.
On July 23, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the publication of the revised Online Safety Bill in the government gazette and its tabling in Parliament.
Before the bill's passage, experts expressed concerns about specific sections but could not propose amendments during the committee stage. Consequently, on February 12, 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the drafting of an amendment to the Security of Online Methods Act No. 9 of 2024 to address these concerns.
The Cabinet has now endorsed the proposal by Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles to publish the draft amendment bill in the government gazette and to present it to Parliament for approval.
